Hi Terry it picks up the revs from the fuel pump(diesel only),the sensor runs through the socket on the pump take apart and clean connections.You should find this cures the problem.If still the same check connections on back of dash might be loose.Hope this helps Mick49
I have an early Fourtrak (1985) and the Bosch VE fuel pump fitted to the engine has only a single wire connection, which is the fuel cutoff solenoid.
I was under the impression that the tachometer on my car is fed from some auxiliary connection on the alternator - but I'm not entirely sure.
There are some earlier discussions on this - try searching this site.
I've had a look at the wiring diagram, which is as clear as mud - the tachometer is connected to a symbol which means AC generator, labeled "pickup"..... can't find any other mention of it (after a quick look).
