Play in the rear axle

Forum:

F78 Fourtrak:
I have approximately 5mm of vertical play in my rear diff/axle where the propshaft enters the axle. I suspect this is rather a lot and that the outer bearings on that part of the diff have collapsed. Are these bearings user servicable or will I have to source a replacement rear diff/axle?

User servicable, remove the

User servicable, remove the prop and hang it up, undo the 30mm nut inside the input drive flange and slide out. Prise out the oil seal and discard and you will see the bearing, extract it with a bearing extractor.

Refit the new bearing, you can get them from engineers suppliers or bearing specialists. Take the old bearing and they will measure it, or give them the number off the housing and they will match it. Many bearings have a heavy duty equivalent which are slightly more expensive, but worth it.
Replace the oil seal, drive flange, propshaft, and job done and no need to remove the axle.

Thanks

Any recomendations as to the type of bearing extractor to use?

You can get a through the

You can get a through the bearing type, this locks onto the outer race but fits between the races. It means prising the ball seperaters down to get it in, a two legged type should suffice.
