Sounds like a head gasket or
Sounds like a head gasket or cracked head, both common problems if the cooling system is incorrectly maintained.
Simple tests:
Run the engine up to normal working temperature and stop it and allow it to cool. Remove all the spark plugs and get someone to turn it over, if any droplets of water shoot out of a spark plug hole it is confirmed.
Remove the oil filler cap, if this is covered in a mayonaise like substance it is an internal leak, so could be either.
Have, or do a compression test.
if you remove the plugs and
if you remove the plugs and crank it over would you not get fuel out the holes?
cheers

Others ............
I agree with assasin and the most likely cause is the head gasket.
Alternative and worth checking:
1. A stuck thermostat - coolant boils and blows out the radiator cap.
Your sporty is 16 years old and most thermostats will be knackered after 10 years.
Easy to remove but take care NOT TO OVERTIGHTEN the nuts [max 5 lb/ft], get the correct type/length of thermostat [wrong sort and the engine will overheat], fit with the jiggle uppermost and use gasket sealant both sides of the supplied seal.
2. Blocked radiator. Has the radiator been flushed in its lifetime?
3. Water pump belt - check tension.
4. Water pump knackered.
one more thing
but this will only result in a little loss of water undetected, is it leaking out of the emergency holes on the water pump? if the engines hot evidence dissapears......
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

No, you will get fuel vapour
No, you will get fuel vapour out of the holes, not fuel; if it is a solid substance then it is water.
You do not sit cranking it you just crank it over enough to turn the engine through two full revolutions.
