Forum:
i did my timing belt on my first diahasu and it went fine.
so i replaced this one and it was fine until today it snapped whilst driving.
the cam belt was virtually in powder when i opened up there was dust every where
like its been slowly ground away until too thin to cope.
was i too tight with tension, its overheated a couple of times whist i had probelms with cooling system.
was it a cheap belt, oil water form overheat pouring on it .
anyone came across this before.
probably a new engine now but id like to know what i did wrong.
Oil or water containation
Oil or water containation wouldn't damage the belt like that, but heat would. The rubber has dried out for some reason, rubber is damaged by UV rays, so if the belt was stored for a long time open to light this would degrade the rubber. Did it damage the engine?
cheers
Rob
thanks for reply it
thanks for reply it overheated about 4 times on me.
im fitting a new belt tomorrow so ill find out for sure if it is damaged im set on a new engine then if it is not its a bonus got one lined up.
so not my fault you think?

ive benen thinking this was destroyed this belt in less than 500 miles so its got to be something bad to have caused it.
im now think warpage of the pulleys or something after overheat.
any ideas anyone.

Running gear.
TDI discovery also suffers similar wear of the cam belt but at much higher mileage. The cause is miss-aligned running gear which wears away the side wall of the belt until it snaps. I fear you could have fitted the new cam belt but failed to align a pully or the tensioner. Consequently the side wall of the belt rapidly rubbed and dusted away.
It could be any number of
It could be any number of things, so to the beginning.
Is the belt a good quality item and stored correctly? of not it destroys the internal structure of the belt. It should not be twisted or have too small a radius when stored.
Did you replace the tensioner? or did you use the old one? did you examine them for wear or deterioation. Always examine them and renew the tensioner, or its bearing.
Was it tensioned correctly, overtensioned, or was something left loose which moved to overtension it.
Was it routed correctly.
thanks all for replies. i not
thanks all for replies.
i not certain of quality it was cheapest i could find so i doubt it was good.
i have no idea about storage i fitted the same day it arrived.
when i fitted it was harder than the first one i did and i twisted it, forced it, bent it,i had it on and off 4 time minimum and had slightly oily fingers i also over tightened it as well i think.
i did not replace tensioner the old belt looked in excellent condition and i only changed as a precaution and there is no play or problems with them turning even now.
id say its was my fault buying cheap, then just messing about with it for to long and, then over tightening ive found out now that it must have 1.8 mm play so ill do that this time.
thanks

Where do you buy the belt and
Where do you buy the belt and tensioner from Assassin? I would like to now a good brand/supplyer to fit the Fourtrak.
I prefer the "Gates or Bosch"
I prefer the "Gates or Bosch" belts as they are reinforced with carbon fibre right into the teeth, and much stronger than many others.
Fit the belt and tension it, run the engine for about 100 miles and check the tension as they all stretch slightly. Retension if necessary.
Replace the tensioner with the belt, or if you can get the bearing out, do this and replace just the bearing as this is the moving part which wears.
