Fourtrak rear axle problems

Our R reg fourtrak 2.8tdx independent estate has developed an alarming screeching sound when travelling about 50mph, it is ok when power is applied but when you lift the throttle there is this horrible screech from somewhere.
This began when towing the caravan up a hill and has steadily got worse. I had a local mechanic look at it and he was a bit bemused as until 50mph it seems normal. However he checked the gearbox and transfer box oil levels (ok) when he checked the rear diff oil levels he discovered metal shavings/broken bits. I suspect we have lost a few teeth from one or more of the gears in the diff. Is there any way to repair the diff or do we have to replace the complete axle?
After he had replaced the diff oil the grumbling and sreeching appeared to worsen.

You can buy the components, but you will have to know how to set them up, and how to mesh the gears correctly.

It would be much cheaper and a lot easier to fit a good secondhand axle, there are plenty around.

i agree with assasin ...get an axle of a scraper, if theres bits in the diff oil theres bits breaking in the diff , its just so much easier to change the complete axle.

Thanks for that.
Had a feeling that replacing was the likely answer. Having trouble locating one at the moment, I live in Wiltshire , any ideas where I can look?

I can see the point made about the bearing but I think the metal coming out in the diff oil is too much of a clue to dismiss.

its a wheelbearing on one of the halfshafts speaking from experience of having similar before, pull out n grease then try again at 50. this is a simple idea before spending money.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
