Newbe with 4wd problem,advice needed

Forum:

Hi there,I've just bought a Fourtrack TDL Indepedent on an M plate with lever to select 2WD/4WD options and auto free wheeling hubs,I really know nothing about them at all.

When 4wd is selected the rear spins up on the snow but the none of the fronts do and no 4wd indicator light showing on the dash, there are no un'toward noises from the diffs, transfer or gearbox.
In 2wd the front prop spins freely and in 4wd the prop locks in both directions and when the slack is taken up by hand the front drive shafts also move with it. I know this has been covered many times but could anyone give me some advice on weather it sounds like a solnoid or free wheeling hub problem??

After a lot of reading on

After a lot of reading on here it could be the auto locking hubs are to blame??
But should I still have a light on the dash to indicate it's in 4WD even though it's a manual selector on the transfer box and not a button type on the dash???

If the light is not working

If the light is not working then the bulb is blown, 4WD is not engaging, the switch is defective, or you have a wiring problem.

Ideally you need the vehicle in the air with the wheels off the ground, engage 4WD and check the front propshaft is turning. If it is turning, the system is engaging and it is an electrical problem with the light

If the front propshaft is turning and the wheels are not, it is either a diff or hub problem. If you remove a hub you can see the end of the driveshaft, if this is turning it is the hub not engaging.

You have two options, replace the hubs with manual ones, or read the section on hubs in the how it works section of the site.

Right 4 wd on a fourtrak Does

Right 4 wd on a fourtrak Does Not mean all 4
wheels turn , power always turns the easiest
wheel on any axle/independant set up, they Do
Not have difflock in the diff housing unless your
lucky and have a foreign one !
the set up of 4 wd is thus - Engine, to main
gearbox , to transfer gearbox , to two
propshafts, one goes forward one goes
rearward , they connect to - differentials , which
turn two half shafts (driveshafts ) on the ' axle ' ,
which connect to the wheels (basically )
what is hubs ??
Manual hubs
Auto hubs
permanent locked hubs
these connect half shafts to the wheels
(basically )
manuals : lock in to use 4 wd or can be driven
in locked in 2 wd but spins components an uses
more fuel.
auto : when 4wd is selected and halfshafts start
turning the auto locking mechanism ( nothing
electrical ) grabs and starts turning tyres .
permanent : as it says nothing to select ,
everything is always spinning, also nothing to
go wrong .
Different ways of selecting 4 wd :
2 h (2 wd on rear wheels only )
4 h ( 4 wd, both propshafts turning , same
gearbox speed range as 2wd )
4 L ( 4 wd with a lower ratio of gearing from the
transfer box, makes the wheels turn slower
even when revved)
some 4wd selecting choices :
on a lever sometimes 2h 4h n 4 L
n meaning neutral , the rest self explanatory
on a dashboard you might see 4 h but have a
lever too that says 2 h 4 L ,
this means 4 wd will work in 4 L via the lever or
if you want 4h gearing , leave in the 2 h position
and push the 4 h button , this activates a
solonoid on the transfer gearbox to ' kick' in 4 h
every vehicle has a 4 wd light, which activates in
whatever 4 wd mode
Deactivating 4wd : sometimes when returning to
2 wd you may need to reverse a couple of
meters to make sure its ' knocked out ' ,
push down on cluth to use levers helps too .
this is the basics, as there are soo many
repeated silly questions on 4wd i thought i
would write it , but you can find it in the
handbook of your vehicle anyway .

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
