Sportrak Number Plate Light Fault

Forum:

Hi all
I was wondering if anybody on here has had experience in fixing number plate light fault on a Sportrak???

My 1996 Sportrak number plate lights stopping working about a month ago, so today I decided to look into it.

I initial tested the bulbs and they were fine.

Then tested to see if 12v present and no nothing there at all, but earth was fine.
I then got the old workshop manual out and a flick through it, here is the first question, does anybody know what version the UK sportraks are? The choices are

a) Version A – AUS, GE Specification,
b) Version B – EC Specification,
c) Version C – EC Specification with DimDip Switch,
d) Version D - EC Specification with Day-Light system,

I thought my car is version B as I could not find the Day-Light Relay under the bonnet (as the manual implied)

I did a few tests, I buzzed the earth to the lights, it was fine, then checked to see if 12v was on the other side of the bulbs, nothing.
I then check to see if there was any continuity between the rear lights and the number plate light, nothing (according to the manual it is a common 12v rail).
I tried to trace the cables from the connector in the back trailgate and found that it goes into the back wing and drops down the column, then I could not find it!
I traced the rear light and they terminate in the plastic connector under the passengers seat, but none of the connection in that connector have any continuity to the live on the number plate light.
Does anybody know if the number plate light goes via the connector under the passengers seat?

If UK cars have a DayLight Relay, does anybody know where it is?

If UK cars do not have a DayLight Relay where does the 12V for the number plate light originate from?

Thanks for any help!

i presume the day light thing

i presume the day light thing is the scandinavian sidelights on all the time version.
ive only played with a fourtrak but its probably similar...
id be inclined to connect the number plate light to the offside tail light... even run a pair of wires between the two lights... i cant find a wiring diagram at the moment, but some of the fourtrak wiring is a bit odd... some of the lights have a constant feed and the switch in the earth wire.
the headlight switch appears to switch the headlight earth wires and the relay that supplies the headlight power.... i suppose theres a reason for it but it seems a bit ott to me.

if theres two wires to the no plate light its probably a switched earth ,
one wire would be switched power with earth return through the body
