fourtrak wont start

Forum:

hello all

Got a 96 desiel fourtrak went to put some fuel in and its not started since, got fuel to the pump but nothing coming out of pump. garage cant get it going.
anyone got any ideas?

cheers

john

If fuel is going to the pump

If fuel is going to the pump then it is either the pump or fuel shut off valve which is faulty.

Put your hand on the pump where the wires go into it, this is the fuel shut off valve. Get someone to turn on the ignition, if you feel a pronounced click then the fuel shut off valve is working.

If you feel no click then it is not working, and is the problem.

thanks for your comments

thanks for your comments engine will run on brake cleaner so I know thats ok, garage think its eletric thinking its to do with the ecu wouldnt of thought it would even have a ecu at that age.

cheers john

wowwww

easy start not brake cleaner, that will take stuff off the walls like paint stripper. If you have fuel to the pump, then fuel not getting to injectors as assassin said its the Pump, its a diesal engine, it has a fuel shut off in the pump, its the only way you can stop the diesal engine running, or take away air supply, so fuel to pump, no fuel to injectors = pump problem!!!!!

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

not sure what year the

not sure what year the fourtraks started having ECUs but yours may have one. mine does and its on a 98 plate. all the ECU does is control the immobiliser and the EGR valve so if the ECU is faulty it could be the immobiliser giving you trouble.

if your engine looks like this you have an ECU

immobiliser on the fuel pump

Disconnect the 12v battery.

It could be the immobiliser. Try disconnecting the battery. Reconnect after 5 minutes and try starting.
My old disco suffered the same problem which the AA diagnosed. The trick is to power off the immobiliser to discharge the capacitors so the power loss re-sets it.
PS ....... thats how the thieves nick your motors!

Interesting to read it happened at a garage. I suspect you might have been zapped by a microwave tower transmitting on the same frequency as your immobiliser. Immobiliser of certain frequencies are no longer fitted due to common frequencies of some transmitters - including security fences and electric gates. There is now a frequency/rolling codes set aside entirely for vehicles only. Previously none European motors got zapped within Europe due to conflicting usage of frequencies. Park within range or within reception area and your motor gets immobilised. Your motor might have been zapped by the intercom of the petrol pump !
