Terios central diff lock won't disengage

Forum:

I'm in Australia and just bought an '01 Terios. There's a problem though. The central diff lock won't disengage.

Tried the usual forward and reverse manoeuvres, checked tyres are equal size, tried disengaging on hard and soft surfaces etc etc. The vacuum switches are working but unsure if the servo is leaking. That'll be my next test.

Is the transfer case easy to remove and rebuild. Could I just remove the servo and be able to move whatever mechanism is there to disengage the diff lock?

Also is there a workshop manual somewhere on the net? I found one but it didn't have any details on the transfer case.

Thanks
Dan

They will have some form of actuator, it may be a solonoid or vacuum, in either case most are bolt on items and just push and pull to engage or disengage, but I would find and check the indicator switch first as it may be engaging/disengaging and the switch is stuck in position.

If you disconnect the actuator you can usually pull or push the operating lever to disengage it.

Thanks. I couldn't get the servo-actuator to work, so dropped the transfer case off the car today. No damage so can only assume the lock shaft was stuck. Fairly simple mechanism consisting of a differential in front of the "dog" locking gear.

Plan now is to re-assemble it but before I do I'll silver solder a nut on top of the cross lever. At least if it fails again I can get a spanner onto that nut and shift it manually.
