Help!
I've recently bought an R reg Fourtrack Independent. It seemed ok on the test drive, but since using it in 4WD this weekend, it wont come out of it. With the selector in 2WD and the dash button off, it still registers the electric 4wd light and won't disengage from 4wd. The steering is very heavy, pulling to the n/s and I dare not go above 20mph because it makes a nasty noise. When I stopped, there was a hot smell from the front of the truck.
Any ideas.
Thanks.

Hubs - not gearbox problem
Russ,
Sounds like your hubs are still engaged, your truck will be stuck in 4WD until they unlock. Firstly if they are auto hubs try reversing for a short distance (i.e no more than 6 metres) whilst wiggling the steering wheel from side to side. If they are manual hubs and stuck try unlocking the hubs and then reversing. If all else fails and the hubs refuse to disengage, you may want to jack up the front of the car to unload the transmission/hubs/diff and transfer and try to disengage the hubs that way.

gearbox problem
Thanks David Mc.
I couldn't sort it out so took it to my local garage.
It was a vaccuum problem. The garage that replaced the gearbox had messed up the pipework connections, preventing the vaccuum pressure to dissengage the four wheel drive. I'll inform the previous owner and tell him to change his garage, theyre ripping him off something rotten. They had given it an MOT with three almost bald tyres, the two front ones definately below the legal limit on the inner shoulder, the brake pads only had a fraction of a mm of material on them. A visual check would have failed the brakes, and the wiper rubber was split on the front wipers and perished on the rear.
So much for a full service history!
