Problems with 4wd on sportrak

Forum:

Hi, i am new to this. Have recently bought a sportrak for playing around offroad over the winter.. Problem it it wont work in 4wd. got stuck in some serious mud. Engaged 4 lo an only the rear wheels were spinning. Tryd 4 high and the same. it engages on th dash that its in 4wd but its not. It auto locking hubs. I have strippd the hibs down expecting to find dirt etc clogging them but they were fine. Any ideas???? Cheers

Manual engagement on the

Manual engagement on the gearstick, or electric engagement on a switch?????????????

4x4

Sportrak's are all manually engaged...

Sounds like the front diff is screwed...

4wd on sportrak

Sorry Sportrakattack , but the hubs on all sportraks are not manual, most of them are automatic. I have 2 both mine have auto hubs.

Jack up one of the front wheels ( leave it in 2wd) , turn the drive shaft in the forward direction with your hand . After about 1/4 to half a turn the hub should lock, you should hear something go clunk and the wheel and the drive shaft should lock together , turning as one. If it doesn't do this it's not working, no matter how clean it is. Now do the other side. Unless both sides engage you dont have 4wd.

The next thing to check is ... 1. Is there a front propshaft? 2. Does it turn when 4x4 is engaged? ( you should be able to turn it freely in 2wd in 4x4 it should be locked to the rear prop.) 3 When I turn the prop in 2wd do the drive shafts turn?
I personally think its very unlikely that the diff would be 'gone' without some horrible grinding noises from the differential casing.
I think its the hubs everything else is pretty bomb proof. The grease in the hubs goes all thick and then they stick, clean it out and try and try and scrounge a jamjar of ACL grease from your local haulage garage or bus garage , its really thin and ideal for fw hubs .

I wasn't talking about the hubs... Another comment mentioned electronic 4x4 engagement...
