Forum:
got my 2nd sporty early dec last year, it had no thermostat fitted and always ran cold temp gauge never moved. I fitted a thermostat everything ok ran at bang on half way up the gauge. had a pipe split last week replaced it at the weekend now it runs hot then cools down then heats up again. I have run it with the radiator cap off, it does make bubbling and sucking sounds from the coolant tank when I turn it off but it also fills the tank when its hot
any ideas whats going on and where I should start looking.
Air lock, you need to
Air lock, you need to massage/squeeze water pipes when filling with coolant.
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

I was thinking it might be a air lock, what's the best way to get rid of the aid now tho apart from squeezing the pipes
Ideas
1. Probably had a bit of the split pipe floating in the coolant and has wedged itself into the thermostat preventing it operation correctly. If you remove the thermostat remember to refit with the jiggle uppermost. Wrong way up and the thermostat will not open since there will be an air lock around the thermostat seating. The jiggle allows any air lock to escape.
2. Check the overflow cap is fitting tight. The lugs of the cap bend loose, or the rubber seal is worn. Bend the cap's lugs and check the seal inside the cap.
3. Sniff the coolant in the overflow. Smells of exhaust - suspect blown head gasket.
4.The overflow tank should not overflow when the engine becomes hot. There will be some coolant expansion which retracts back into the engine when the engine cools. If the expansion coolant fails to retract then exhaust gas has entered the cooling system - blown head gasket.
