I have a 1991 1.6 16v sporty. the head gasket went. replaced the gasket & got reconditioned cylinder head, the whole works, skimmed and valves etc. cyl pressure is now good. it has attempted to fire a couple of times but then nothing. had the fuel injection checked and its ok
but it wont start! any suggestions

timing .

Check if the distributor has been fitted correctly. I once fitted one on the exhaust stroke rather than compression stroke.
Did you set the distributor's rotor arm to point to number one cylinder in the distributor's cap WHILST number 1 cylinder is on its tdc compression stroke [finger over spark plug hole and check its the compression stroke]. Then use a 12v lamp to tighten the distributor when light goes off/on etc.
Then use strob light on the fly wheel timing marks and adjust the distributor.

It does sound like timing t

It does sound like timing to me, but do also check the distributor leads are all set up correctly as well, I.E. make sure that #1 lead actually goes to #1 plug, and so on.

If you have one handy, or are prepared to get one (they are only a few quid and a brilliant investment) then a dial gauge is a guaranteed way of finding TDC on the cylinder. Each toolkit should have one.

If all else fails

If everything else is correct get the coil checked - may be producing a spark when tested but not under load. Most likely a timing / assembly issue
