2nd gear problem on 1990 f75 fourtrak HELP!

i HAVE TERRIBLE TROUBLE ENGAGING SECOND GEAR WHEN THE TRUCK IS COLD , ONCE IT HAS BEEN DRIVEN FOR 5 MINUTES ITS LOADS BETTER, ALSO SOMETIMES WITH REVERSE GEAR TOO!
ANY ONE HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS AND HOW I CAN RECTIFY (CHEAPLY)!

Yep, its a common problem. The main train of thought is the main locking nut on the output shaft comes loose, and allows things to move a bit, and makes shifting into 2nd a bit difficult.
Try a couple of different things. First, change the oil to a lighter grade. Too heavy an oil will make life difficult.
Second, try double de-clutching when you change gears. That is, when changing, press clutch in, change out of gear into neutral, release clutch, then press clutch again, and change into next gear.
Third, try missing 2nd completely when cold, change directly from first to third.
Fourth, pull the transfer case off the back of the gearbox and check for the loose nut.
Fifth, pull the gearbox completely, and check for worn synchro rings on 2nd gear.

Good Luck
