simple answer is it tells you in handbook to reverse to disengage 4wd which means im a bit smarter than you dimlo

Not necessarily true,
If it's a Vacuum operated 4x4 than you should check the little vacuum hoses to the gearbox.
Mine had little breaches and sucked air making the vacuum pressure drop and operating the 4x4 slowly.
Could also be the vacuumpump behind the alternator, I was lucky.
Try also releasing the 4x4 on the move but not in gear, helpt me a lot when I had the problem.
