Sounds like a 'bottom ball joint' to me
If you mean the dufus that connects the front suspension wishbone to the front hub assembly, that could well be your man. They have the regular habit of giving up the ghost after 5 years or so.
The gubbins is bolted to the wishbone with 4 bolts, has a grease nipple and a rubber seal around the top.
If that's the thing, Milners have them for about £50 ( don't quote me it's been a while ). You need a good ball joint splitter and, for safety's sake
DONT FORGET TO RELEASE THE TENSION ON THE TORSION BAR SUSPENSION

If its a leaf sprung front end, then its more likely to be a king pin bearing. Remove the wheel, and feel under the swivel housing. You will see/feel 4 12mm bolts. Remove them, and prise the rectangular plate down from the housing. There should be a couple of shims there, which you can remove to take up some play in the bearing. If this doesnt do the job, take off the similar top plate, and remove those shims as well. If this doesnt remove the play, then replacement of the 2 bearings is necessary, which means disassembling the swivel housing.

Failed MOT
Thanks RF man and Bundy. I've checked the swivel housing and there is plenty of play in the bearings so I have ordered new ones. I've checked previous postings about this problem and it seems fairly easy to fit the new bearings. Reminds me of the very early mini's and Morris Marina's (how cars have improved since then). At least there is plenty of room to work on the Rocky.
