Hi all,
My (trusty) old 1991 TDX has been getting really smoky on start up this winter. It only does it for about a minute, then seems to be OK after the motor has warmed up. But its getting embarrasing doing cold starts anywhere in town now, I get dirty looks from people as it belches filthy evil smelling grey fumes everywhere...
I replaced all the glow plugs last year when it was doing this, and it got better for a while but went back to its nasty smoky habits after only about 3 months.
Does anyone else's car do this?
Is it just a case of buying some more glow plugs?
Are some makes of glow plugs better than others?
given that 4 glow plugs cost something like £25 from Milners, I don't want to have to do this every couple of months!!!

Oh yeah, and its also got very spongy brakes and I think the steering box is on the way out too - very very sketchy loose steering getting worse and worse

For the brakes, give them a good bleed. It sounds like there is air in them somewhere. Make sure the rear brake shoes are adjusted correctly as well, dont rely on the automatic adjusters.
For the steering, on top of the box is a screw, with locking nut. Undo the locknut, and screw the screw inwards a bit, then retighten locknut. It may take a couple of goes to take all the slack out of the box. Make sure you dont overtighten it.
