Replacing side windows on my 95 independent.

Forum:

Hi.I,ve decided to "van" my independent, and have just got hold of a pair of side panels to replace the side windows.I,m told the windows"just pop out" ! and then I need to self tap the panels in,and seal with silicone sealant.Sounds too easy!..do I use the existing rubber which is on the windows at present?.Dont want to start the job and end up with a big hole in the side of my truck! anyone done the job before?

just about to do exactly the

just about to do exactly the same to mine! trick is to get your panels lined up and drilled ready, then get a good helping of silicone round the flange and edges to get a good seal.. dont need the rubbers, just lots of silicone, fill the gap and wipe with your finger to get a nice joint at the surface, wipe off excess. bobs yer uncle!

getting old windows out is the tricky bit, purley because its wise to remove the panels around them (probly could leave them in, but would be faffy) which means cage and back seats out....

Side panels

Cheers Ja. Glad to hear i,m not the only one with the opposite idea to everyone else! Most peeps do it the other way round! The panels are already drilled,as thy,re second hand, but luckily the exact same shade of silver.I,m glad to hear that about the rubbers, cos I was in 2 minds.I may try it the "faffy" way !but knowing me i,ll come unstuck!Once I work out how to post pics on the gallery (ive given up trying)I,ll let u have a look.Cheers again

I don't suppose either of your sets of windows have the runners in good condition, I've been looking for a set for ages as mine are rusted to hell

Window runners

Hi...Thats one of the reasons I decided to get rid of the glass, like you,one side of mine is held together wby the rubber, which on a 95 is a shame,as its the only rust on the vehicle (apart from a small patch by the front screen). Its a design fault, theres nowhere for the water to go.The only good point is that at least the rust cant spread to the body from there as its all fibreglass around it.Sorry I couldnt help Bud

Just a simple DIY note to that. If you wet your finger first (licking it is enugh) you get a much smoother finish, and don't end up with silicone stuck all over your fingers.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
