Fourtrak gear/transfer box change

Forum:

I have a 96 f73 fourtrak van with all manual transfer box. While towing the gearbox started rattling in all gears except 4th. I have aquired another gearbox but it has the push button 4wd.Is it possible to convert this transfer box to manual without swopping transfer boxes. i'd be gratefull for any help.

It should just swap over without any dramas. Undo the 8 or so bolts to remove the transfer case along with the approx 4 inch cast iron spacer between them.
While you are in that part of the gearbox, check the nut on the output shaft of the gearbox, as it is the one that gives the 2nd gear problems by coming loose.

Thanks for your reply

Thanks for your reply.so I do need to swap transfer boxes,I take it the solanoid/ vacuum version can't be converted to manual easily. The old box has 110000 and new one has 40000. Might try and wire it up but I don't have a switch, are they they special or will any do.I read that the vacuum is from the alternater.

Im not sure, To be honest, I havent dealt with solinoid cases, so I dont know if they can be converted. I guess it would be a case of looking at the differences side by side.

Thanks again for your help

Thanks again for your help, I found out tonight I need to swap the transfer boxes over,I was living in hope. Thanks again.

Hey there, my mechanic just had my transfer box on and off a couple of times. He said it is wierd that the gearbox/transfer cases have no dowels to align them, and rely on bolts only to hold them in place. I'm only saying this as my transfer box started to give a problem after it had been removed and replaces to fix a separate gearbox problem (the loss of 2nd gear loose nut thing). The transfer lever started jumping into neutral all on its own after it was replaced!

This was fixed completely by unbolting the transfer box, jacking it up a couple of mm and tightening the bolts again! So just to warn that it is possible to put the transfer box back on in the wrong position...

Hope that helps someone!

Gavin.
