Excesive Smoking on cold start up

Forum:

I have a Daihatsu fortrack 2.8 turbo intercooled engin in a s111 land rover. When it's started from cold there is alot of blue smoke and it runs very rough untill it clears.

If any one can point me in the right direction it would save alot of embarisment every morning.

Thanks James

Sounds like timing might be a tad retarded

They do that when they are cold, but you can check two things, first, the glow plugs are all working, and secondly, that the fuel system is completely bled, all the way up to the injectors.

Oil burn.

Blue smoke is oil burn and black smoke is fuel burn. If its blowing blue smoke on start-up then oil is being burned. If you have just bought the 4track and unaware of its service history it might be running on low viscosity oil and 'thin oil' is passing into the cylinders and being burned. After the engine warms up the piston rings expand and the oil stops below the rings. So try changing your engine oil and use the correct grade. It might stop the smoke but if it remains smoky suspect worn piston rings or oil leaking into the cylinders via valves etc. Thicker [a higher 'low number' viscosity]engine oil would probably help but your fuel consumption would slightly increase and cold weather startup would be more difficult. If the 4track has done lots of miles go for a higher 'low number' viscosity.

Blue/white smoke is normal for a cold diesel. Looks quite alarming, but usually clears in a minute or so to normal. If it continually blows blue smoke, thats a different story.
