still over heating

Forum:

ello folks me again i recently wrote about changing my headgasket
this all done i thought the problem was solved.
took the car for a 20 mile round trip today and it over heated in no time had to drive with the heaters full on and this seemed to help.
theres no leaks anywhere if i take the radiator cap of and leave it running eventually it will get hot and the water pushes out as if forced by air theres also an orange bubbly froth that comes out first
im asumming thats just from all the oil crap that found its way in the cooling system when i took the head off.
the water pump seems to be working fine as i can see the water in the rad circulating from right to left.
a fella was round the other day and thought the rad was blocked as it was hot on the outta edges but cool in the middle but i dismissed that as the fan is on the other side so its bount to be cool to the touch.
now im wondering if im wrong
all hoses are hot to.
any advice before i shell out for a new radiator cheers daz

rad

Assuming the thermostat is functioning flush the radiator with a hose pipe. If the car is 10years+ it might be needing a recore. Costs about £90 - motor rads UK etc.

Get a good alkaline based rad

Get a good alkaline based radiator flush. Drain your cooling system entirely, including the block. Then use the flush as directed. Then, drain the system again, remove the block drain bung, the thermostat housing and thermostat, all radiator hoses and heater hoses, baically anything that allows you access into the cooling system with a hose, and flush with water until absolutely clean. Check the block drain bung, there could be a lot of crap trapped behind there. If so, knock it out, and flush again. Then reverse flush everything.
If you have the equipment to do the job, remove the top tank from the radiator, and ream the tubes with something like a dipstick, but make sure its long enough to go all the way through to the bottom tank. A radiator place will do this job, but if the fins are corroded then its not worth it, may as well get a recore. There is a Toyota HiLux (Early to mid 80's, I think) core that will do the job.

Then use good quality coolant in the system.

And be wary of buying a second hand radiator, especially if it has sat for a time empty. The salts, calcium, rust, ect, that floats around in cooling systems dry and flake away when radiators sit unused for a while, and become a blocking problem when used again. If this is the way you are going to go, then try a radiator filter. Basically like a fabric sock, (the foot of a ladies stocking can be used) put this in your radiator hose, with it clamped in place to catch anything loose in the coolant system. It needs to be checked regularly, depending on how bad it is.

hi, if when the head gasket w

hi, if when the head gasket went you had oil mixing with the water, this makes a white creamy sludge and is renowned for blocking radiators. i have known alot of cars have the head sorted only to find this problem. the advice to flush it is your best bet, other than that its a case of either getting the radiator recored or find a second hand one. good luck

i am always in shit, its just the depth that varies

cheers

thanks for that folks

re:overheating

i have a 92 feroza with the very same problem.at the moment she is in a shed because of it.anyway my solution would be to take out the thermostat and see then.that is what i am going to do.this should solve your problem.i worked before on one of my tractors which had the very same problem and that tractor is still going and that was 2 years ago.
if you get the problem solved, let me know please.
