High level rear lights on a late model independent

Forum:

Hi. I want to fit the higher level rear lights to my independent in addition to those fitted in the bumper. I remember that these were available as a kit from Daihatsu when they were still selling new Fourtraks. Does anyone know whether the high level lights fitted to the earlier models fit the later models and also, how does one remove the blanking plates fitted in their place to the later models?
Cheers,
Jon

AFAIK they are compatable. Tr

AFAIK they are compatable. Try removing the interior side panels to gain access to behind the false body panel. The original rear lights have screws from the outside, into plastic plugs pushed into holes in the panelwork.

The wiring is already there AFAIK

As we speak, my 4trak is in the shop after someone ran into the back. (not much damage except for bent bits of tin). The real pain in the bum is the vunerability of the back lights to minor knocks. Did Daihatsu put these here to increase the after sales market for smashed rear lights, I wonder.

Is it OK to blank off the rear bumper lights and just use the high level rear lights instead? These are also out of the way of all the mud and cack that screws up the electrics of the low-level lights.

I dont know about the UK, but

I dont know about the UK, but in Oz, the lights went from the rear 1/4 panels to the rear bumpers to meet an Australian Design Rule that stated that the rear lights must be visible from a certain angle to the rear. Something like 45 deg to the side of the rear. This meant that the rear door mounted spare obscured the right hand lights when viewed from the left hand side, and vice versa. It was the early 90's that the change was made, so most 4wd's with door mounted spares went this way. Now, here, its probably an offence to change them back. Its ok to put the high level ones there, as an auxillary to the originals, but not to replace them. Why not check with your MOT, or whoever makes those types of rules up over there. Exactly the same reasion here

Exactly the same reasion here Bundi.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Rear lower lights

You could always get some bumper protectors, the black bar assembly that fits across the lights, these will give a measure of protection. While I'm on, how easy did you find it to fit the high level rear lights, as I'm currently considering getting some for mine. Also, I've got a high level LED brake light, any ideas on how to hide the wiring from the top middle of the rear door down to the hinged side, so that I can "jump" the gap to the wiring loom for the rears?

I have a ligh level LED brake

I have a ligh level LED brake light at the top of my rear screen. I drilled a hole into the door frame immediately above where the wiring comes out of the light. I used a grommet there. You will need to run a length of fairly decent wire up through the window frame to pull the thin wire through to the big wiring grommet down the bottom of the door. There should be a rectangular rubber plug in the door near the top door hinge that allows access to the upper part of the door frame for this purpose. It takes a bit of jiggling, but it can be done. Then just follow the ewxisting wiring across the door jamb gap, and find a brake wire in the 1/4 panel and solder it into place.

Cheers
David

Hi level lights

Thanks for the advice. I've gotten hold of a set of used lights and I will see how they fit over the weekend.

Jon

Hi Level lights

Did you get yours on ebay on Sunday eve? - I was looking at them as well you swine!! Never mind, there's another set on there now. Can you let me know how easy / hard you found it to fit them? Also, I've got one of those high level led brake lights for the top of the door - any thoughts on how to run the wiring in?
