Help needed!

Forum:

I have just purchased a fourtrack from this site, from a man who seemed, to me to be pretty genuine and honest. I was obviously very foolish, as less than a week later, I find the propshaft is **ackered!
COULD ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME WHERE I COULD PURCHASE ONE OF THESE AND ROUGHLY HOW MUCH IT WILL COST.
Unfortunately, I havent a clue about 4x4's, all I wanted was a reliable vehicle to tow a horse trailer with. I bought this one because it had a FSH.
I am now at my wits end, can anyone please Help
It is a fourtrack EL 2.8 TD 1990 model, I live in Coventry, I purchased it from Leicestershire.
Thanks

Unless the propshaft is bent,

Unless the propshaft is bent, you should be able to get replacement universal joints from the dealer. I'd do them all, front and rear, while you're at it.

If the propshaft is truly knackered, you're probably at the mercy of a breaker or eBay.

propshaft

To be honest, Im not too sure, all I know is that it keeps making a clonking noise when changing gear and the steering starts to shake,
when I looked underneath, the back part seems to be making the noise as it is moving in the joint, do you think i need a new propshaft?

Can anyone help, I am thinking about buying a fourtrak to tow a horse trailer, as I have heard they are brilliant towing vehicles.
I was wondering what the fuel consumption was like on them, I am probably looking for a 2.8TD unless anyone could recommen

shaft

I have just noticed that you are talking about the Fourtrak I sold you.

I had no idea that the Prop was gone.....you brought that nice gentalman with you to view it, you and him took it out for a test drive, my wife even took you out for over 20 min's, then you drove it home...with no issues (if there was I would have expected a call)

I'm sorry to hear that it has gone, I was as honest I knew the car to be I had only owned it for less than two months. I resent that fact you think that you now regard me as 'seemed to be honest'....I am. You knew I had only owned it for a couple of months

I have not touched the prop shafts nor was there a problem when I sold it....you say a week later..It must have driven home Okay..I'm sorry, but having a UJ gone is not my fault...these thing happen, If I had know she had gone I would have pointed it out, or it would have shown it self on the two test drives you went on. it was fine when you drove it etc......

Never the less, sounds to me like it is a UJ, these do go, if the prop was bend it would have done this to me when I owned it, and on your two test drives, and on the way home.... (this is the joint on the end of the prop shaft) these are £12.50 from Milners off road. http://www.milneroffroad.com/TRANS2.HTM

I'm sure the guy how came with you how advised you on buying the trak will be able to replace them, it is not a big job.

To further prove my honestly, If you are really stuck I can lend a hand is changing them out. This is not my fault...I am honest and always willing help people......

yours and very upset H......

Cheers

apologies

Im sorry, Im afraid I was really wound up when i posted the message this morning. As you can imagine, alot of people including my husband have implied that Im a typical woman who has been ripped off.
I appreciate you replying to my message, and believe you when you say you sold it in good faith.
Unfortunately, As you are probably aware, I am very much in the dark when it comes to cars, let alone 4x4's and have little knowledge on where to take it to be repaired. The man who came with me, was a stand in for my husband who did not back the idea of me buying a fourtrack (he kindly offered to have a look and give his opinion)
therefore, I dont like to ask him to help me.
I looked in the reciepts and found that it has had a rear propshaft about 2 yrs ago, so am rather hoping it is the universal joints.
Could you possibly advise me on where to take it, at the moment i am concerned as to whether I can driveit as it shakes rather badly.
Once again, please accept my apoligies for jumping rather irratly to the wrong conclusion.

prop shaft

Thank you for clearing my name.........

Right, I do not know of the place in coventry that helps with prop shafts but I would suggest giving them a call. I'm 100% sure that the shaft is not bend other wise I would have had problems.

I would strongly suggest not driving her whilst you have a knocking. If the shaft joints break then all hell will break lose.

You say you see it moving???? have the UJ bolts come lose???

I know that the new UJ joints are only 12:50 each (so at the most to change them all you are looking @ £50). I will gladly come down and take a look for you. As you know I travel a lot with work (I only got back from Malaga yesterday) and again tomorrow I leave for the week to rome, then the week after Spain again so I can not really help until next weekend at the earlist, but I have committed to helping a guy called Paul how I have NEVER met help fix his track next weekend (new rear oil seal and prop shaft)

However, I can blast down on the bike NEXT weekend and take a look if you can wait that long, I honestly do not know what is wrong, but I'm sure it can only be a UJ. Call the guys in Cov see what they say. I will tell you if you are being ripped off.

Please give me call so I can help....I will make effort to assist.

prop shaft

I have found someone who will come and take a look at it tomorrow night for me, to let me know if it is the uj's, hopefully, you are right. I havent moved it just in case. Thanks for offering to come and take a look, I realize that you are extremely busy with work and everything so appreciate your offer of help. I will try to get it fixed by myself, if I run into problems though, I may take up your offer of taking a look next weekend, if thats ok.
I will keep you informed after tomorrow evening when I know a bit more.
Thanks again Smile

Props/uj's

Hi

All prop uj's could potentially wear out/fail, and are easily replaceable. Regular greasing is vital especially on an ageing/high mileage vehicle. as mentioned cost is not excessive. Any competent garage will fit. Sand/grit/dirt is the enemy of any joint with bearings!

Do a search on google or yell.com for propshaft and you will find plenty of people who specialise in this area.
