GEARBOX

Forum:

Can anyone help!! i have a daihatsu 4x4 it is an f reg, it is a great car ,but i am having difficulty changing down the gears , what ever gear you are in it won't go into 2nd , changing up the gears is no problem.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? There is no crunching of the gears and it drives like a dream.

Assuming you have a Diesel Fourtrak, 2nd gear changes seem to be a problem with them, especially when cold. However, it could be the 2nd gear syncro ring that is on its way out. Only way to check that is to disassemble the gearbox. However, this problem is usually accompanied by crashing of 2nd gear when changing.

No it's not a diesel it's petrol. Can the syncro ring be replaced without having to replace the gearbox? it is due for an MOT soon can this fail the MOT do you know? if the gearbox has to be replaced any idea what sort of price a new or reconditioned gearbox would be.Thanks sarah

GEARBOX

I SARAH IT WOULD BE CHEAPER TO HAVE ANOTHER GEARBOX THAN BE STRIPPED DOWN TO PUT A RING GEAR IN AND NO IT WONT AFFECT YOUR MOT

2ND GEAR FAULT

SARAH
try doubling your clutch if it then goes in smooth its a syncro fault 1
this can be overcome by the clutch doubling !
(sounds tricky but once you get used to it its very easy )
and can save you around £375 !
other than that have someone check the oil levels in your g/box this can cause a sticky syncro !

Just learn to doubl-d-clutch

Just learn to doubl-d-clutch mate. It's not worth pulling a gear box out untill it don't go no more. There prity much bullit proff, don't worry it's not dying, it's just developing caricter. It's when revers stops working you worry. Then the main shaft is about to fall out. But that's not as bad as it sounds. The main shaft nut strips it's thred sometimes. It can be remidied in situ. Remove transfur box, and replace nut with mini metro hub nut. No honist, it fits. But as long as all gears work, and don't jump out more that every now and then LEAVE WELL ALOWN.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

gearbox synchros

I've got a 94 sportrak gas, synchros are getting worn. most of my connections are in the US. Would be simplest to pick up a used tranny. Can you tell me if this gearbox was used in any Toyotas etc. marketed in the States? Can you direct me to someone who would know if you don't.
