Cambelt: Help (Fourtrak)

Forum:

Hi there,
I'm wanting to replace my cam belt but when trying to set the engine at TDC the pulley wheel seems to have two indents in it and there doesn't seem to be a pointer to line it up on the cam belt cover. The only thing i can see is a pointer at about 1 o'clock, but in the manual it seems to indicate 7 o'clock. Where is the TDC setting?

Also do I need any speacial tools to replace the cam belt - such as a tension tester?

Any help graetly appreciated

what year us she?

What year is your trak?

The injector pump mark on models up to 1993 is at about 1 O-Clock
The Crank is about 8 O-Clock
The cam shaft is about 11 O-Clock.

It was (should) when I did it be pretty simple. The only tools you should need is torque wrench (9.8Nm)

If you can, take picture of you arrangement and E-mail it to me, I will attempt to 'point' them out (no pun intented)

Cambelt pulley

Cheers for the response, I'm still in the process of getting the cambelt cover off.

The year of the unit is about 1992-3. Its a NAD 2.8. I gather getting the crankshaft pulley off is just a case of undoing the large nut on the front of it. Its just that it proving rather stubborn to remove.

cam belt

Removing the crank pully can be a bit hard, yes you just need to remove the nut, then pull it off. They are oftern a nightmare, they seem welded on, then suddenly, they just pop off. Try tapping it with a hyde hammer (Personally I use a set of 3 leg pullers)

Once the crank is off just whip the front cover off, it should be clear then where the marks are.

Replaced

Hi
replaced the belt and all seemed fine. The injection and cam shaft pulleys had the markers on them so set the engine up with all aligned to the markers and put the new belt on. hOwever when I come to start it it now has a slight erratic idling - may be only on one cylinder. Any suggestions. I cant run it for long as I'm still awaiting a new radiator. What did seem strange was that the TDC marker on the flywheel was not aligned with the marker on the plastic cover when all the pulley wheels were aligned. When fitting the belt I turned the engine so that the pulleys were aligned and the marking on the flywheel was not - have I upset the timing?

Many thanks

Andrew

timine

Sounds to me like the timing is out. ALL the markers should line up.

You need to aline all the marks, it sounds to me like you just lined up the cam and injection. You need to line up the flywheel as well !

Do not be afriad to remove the belt and let everything move, the markers are there for a reason. Take the belt off, line up the injector pump, cam and flywheel. Then replace the belt and idler.

Then turn the engine over by hand (using a bar on the flywheel nut) to ensure all the markers line up again. REMEMBER, you will need to turn the engine over twice to get the markers to line up (she's got 4 cyc's)

Thanks

Hi ya - thanks very much for the info. You were right the injection pulley was one notch out - never changed a cambelt so quick. The actual getting to the cam belt only took about 15 minutes, it was the radiator that took about 1.5 hours

Many thanks again for the information

Andrew

no worries

You are more then welcome Wink
