Intercooler Missing?

Forum:

Hi there, I have a Fourtrack 90(H) which has had a second hand DL52 engine fitted from the Independent which works fine, My question is should the DL52 have a Intercooler fitted as mine has'nt got one fitted the turbo has a bye pass but works ok. What major difference doe's not having a Intercooler and has anybody changed the engines like this before?

the fourtrak i took some bits

the fourtrak i took some bits off in the local scrappy at the wkend had a turbo but no intercooler!
the intercooler improves the thermal effiency of the system, an intercooler will improve power! as the combustion cycle effiecny is further improved!

anyone wana ride in my hovercraft!

intercooler

Thanks for your reply, So do you know if it will damage the engine or turbo not having one fitted.

mike no intercooler

Mike,

Having no intercooler will not 'damage' the system as such, it just means she will not run at 100% full potential power.

Basically, diesels engine will combust with higher force the cooler (and denser) the inlet air is. As the charge air rises the combustion force lowers.

If someone can help here I would appreicate it but....I guess that on intercooled models the Turbo Boost is set higher????relying on the intercooler to cool the charge air (which gets heated more due to the increased boost?)

However, personally, If I was in you situation, I would be looking for an intercooler to re-fit, just becasue I would want the full potential of my engine Wink not because I was worried about damaging the engine.

I will keep an eye out for one on my travels

I hope this helps..

There were some of the F seri

There were some of the F series diesels that were turboed, but not intercooled, from the factory. It may have only lasted a year or so, Im not quite sure. I have one of these motors fitted to my F75 now. I also bought an intercooler, and fitted it myself. Not a real drama to do, you just need to pull the turbo partly apart to spin the compressor outlet away from the manifold inlet to allow room for the intercooler plumbing.

intercooler

Hi there, I now have intercooler for my fourtrack, how did you plumb yours in and how did you move the bottles around, Mine is a 90 H with a independent engine in and has the original rad and bottle system, Cheers

Its a good idea to get a look

Its a good idea to get a look at a vehicle that has the intercooler fitted as standard, to get a bit of an idea what goes where. You have to remove the turbo, and undo the 5 bolts that hold the intake housing together. You have to spin the housing so the outlet points downward. You need to move the radiator overflow bottle. I made up a new bracket and it now sits on the firewall beside the washer bottle. Cut a suitable hole through the radiator support panel. Now all you need to buy is some 50mm thin walled alloy tube, and some suitable rubber bends. You then just play with the locations to get it all plumbed up. Have a look at my site below, go to Davids Rocky in the pics, and look for the picture Engine Bay 3. It shows a bit of the plumbing. Engine Bay 4 shows the pipe used.

Have fun
