Transfer dropping into neutral

Forum:

I've had my 99 Fourtrack for a couple of months now with no problems. It's got 60K on the clock, and a full service book. Whilst driving today (steady 75 in fifth on the M3) it twice jumped from 2H into neutral, in about 10 miles. I managed to get the 35 miles home at 55 without a re-occurence. There were no nastey noises or anything, it just 'fell out' of gear. The transfer box seems to be working fine otherwise (I hadn't used it much to the point), and the main gearbox seems to be problem free. Has anyone got any ideas what's going wrong?

There is a 2 pronget fork typ

There is a 2 pronget fork type bit (for want of a better word) in the top of the box that gets worn. It's a pain to chang, and a bit pricey to get hold of. To be honist the best answer is, use a bungy cord to hold the range lever in place. The wearing will take a loooooooooooooooonge time to come to anythoing seriouse.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

I use a bungee cord on my 1979 Taft to stop the transfer box going into neutral too (obviously a fault with ALL Daihatsus then)... what could go bang if I don't get it looked at?

Probably nothing will go bang

Probably nothing will go bang under normal light usage. If you do lots of shifting fron 2-4 wheel drive, see my previous coments.
