funny knob on the dash

Forum:

hi there we have just acquired a fourtrack 1991 jobbie. i am slowly getting used to it's dark secrets as i have been fitting a radio in it today, all i had was a mass of wires, but somehow it all came together in the end (a long story)

during fitting the radio i was trying to take off the panel around the steering column, just two screws along the bottom edge and two clips at the top after prising it past the choke knob (the sign on it looked like that anyway, when does it have to be used?) on the right, but on the left of the column there is a black shiny knob like a tap, all it does is turns round and doesnt appear to do anything at all, but it stopped me getting the panel off, what does it do or what should it do Unknw or can i get rid of it ??.

Assuming its a diesel we are talking about here, one will be the hand throttle. It should be the one on the right. Start your vehicle, and turn the knob to the right, keep turning. Eventually the revs will increase. It actually pulls the pedal down a bit. Its useful if you need constant slow speed, such as when traversing big rocks in low range. The throttle doesnt bounce around with your foot movements. It should have a symbol like a choke symbol.

thanks a lot friend, i didnt

thanks a lot friend, i didnt know that, that the "choke" knob is a hand throttle (it is a diesel), the dash panel is cut out to let that through, the knob on the other side is the problem.

headlight adjustment

I believe the knob you are talking about is a headlight adjuster, try turning it, facing a wall with lights on , in dark and see what happens ..

it's a headlamp beam adjuster

it's a headlamp beam adjuster, although i have'nt been able to try it yet, the dammed vehicle is never at home, so i dont get to play with it much, LOL

Knobs

What am I missing , I have not got one, all I have is a hand throttle, and mines a 91/92 TDX.

hmm, i have to pass on that one buddy, i am a novice with these four track brutes, the only reason i wanted to know a bit more about this knob, was the fact it was stopping me getting the panel off that goes around the steering column.

I have a Fourtrak 87, and like you, have both "knobs"
I thought that the right hand side one was something like a choke, thanx to earlier post i am now informed.
But my knob on the left adjusts my radio sound to rear or front speakers!
And yes, fitting a radio was quite a challenge for me too!!!!

I know how to drive 'em, race 'em, crash 'em! just not how to fix 'em!

beam adjuster

I have had two traks 1990 and a 1991 (both 2.8TD EL)and neither have had lamp adjusters.....just an FYI..

I would guess that the headlight adjustment was an option on certain spec level Daihatsus. Alternatively, it could only be for the European market, as I have never heard of one fitted to an Oz vehicle.
Regards different spec levels, some vehicles over here had a seperate headlight washer system. Mine doesnt.

OPTIONS

There are various options available, some only for certian markets, depending on where the vehicle is assembled, and who chose what options for the vehicle too.
I have two Diahatsu's, both assembled in Japan and imported second hand into New Zealand.
A 1988 RUGGER F75 2.8Ltr TurboDiesel & a 1992 RUGGER PRIOR F85 2.8Ltd ITD.
The '88 came with PTO Winch, Fog Lights & a rear Heater under driver's seat & Factory white painted 6" wheel rims.
The'92 has Chromed 8" wheel rims, Chromed bumpers, electric windows, central locking, wheel arch flares, Vented disc brakes, and an intercooler for the turbo.
The '92 has factory year/model upgrading making it's "extras" standard equipment whereas the '88 "extras" were chosen options.

funny knobs on dash

Well if you lot dont know what to do with your "knobs" then you might be better off asking a woman to show you!!!!! LOL !!! as for me I feel Under-equiped cos I only have one knob (on my dashboard) LOL!!!

Keep the sunny side up and the muddy side down!!!

knob

the one on the right is the 'choke' it simply pulls the throttle cable...the chances are that the one on the left may be the rear fog light ! This were fitted as an aftermarket option for imports.

Funny knob

Hi Tim the 'choke thing' is the engine regulator. It is used if , for any reason you want to increase the rev's whilst in neutral. You increase the rev's by turning the knob clockwise. As for the other thing I'm not sure. Could it be the adjustable steering column knob?
Cheers, Clive.

Funny knob on dash

Can be used for travelling over rough ground but wouldn’t recommend it my self due to the “knob” being linked directly to the accelerator pedal. As you adjust the knob it will push the accelerator pedal forward giving you no control over the revs thus giving you no control over the vehicle if you want to slow down you will have to brake causing the vehicle to stall and the only way is to put your foot on the clutch pedal.
The object of the “knob” is for adjusting the revs for “take off”. Under the transfer box should be a plate with 6 or 8 bolts this is for attaching a belt of some sorts for external power to a bench saw or other farm/forestry equipment when out in the field. The vehicle is lifted at a 45degress to get access to the panel.
I hope this will help.
