F85RV-MB whine from where?

Forum:

Hi all,
this is my first 4x4 and only had it for a couple of days so i'm as nooby as they come....
i seem to have a whineing nose and not to sure where it's coming from, i have a good idea but thought i'll run it pass you here to see what you come up with, ok i'll do my best to make myself as clear as posible.
with the car in 2 wheel drive i pull of in first gear all sounds good, change to second gear and about half way before changeing up to third a whine starts up, change into third and the whine gets louder and so on untill we are in fith gear where it sounds like the wife's washing machine on finale spin, not to loud, i drove it from Bournmouth (were i brought it from) to Banbury approx 135 miles, no problem no head aches,
when i put it in (4H) full 4 wheel drive and work my way throught the gears there is no whine at all???? any ideas?
possible transfer box? axcels?
many tnx for reading.
Dave..

I would guess rear diff, eith

I would guess rear diff, either pinion or carrier bearings. It sounds speed related, not RPM, as the pitch and volume increases with speed. And when in 4wd, the torque is basically shared between diffs, so not as much strain on either diff.
Check for movement and oil leaks at the rear pinion flange. Movement means a crook bearing. Also check for up and down movement of the rear wheel bearings. Remove the rear wheel, and see if the rear hub moves up and down.
Its possible it could be the transfer case as well. Put the transfer case in N, and start the vehicle, and go up through the gears, to see if the whine is there.

Cheers
David

Tnx for the quick reply,
i forgot to mention in my first post that it is an
1988 Fourtrak F85RV 2L petrol 3Y.
i'll let you know the outcome when i've checked the above advise...
cheers Dave....

ok, i've carried out the test

ok, i've carried out the test stated above and this is what i got,
i put the transfer box into nutral and made my way through the gears and did not get any noise at all, i checked all the oil levels and found that the rear axle had to have about 1/2 point of oil added, that topped up i took it for a test and although the wine is still there it SEEMS to be a little quieter......
so maybe? maybe not the rear axle? some one did say it might be the final drive....but woudn't that whine all the time? even in 4L?
tnx for reading.
