Advice on new battery for fourtrak

Forum:

Hi

i have come to the conclusion that my 91 td fourtrak needs a new battery, it starts up perfectly when i have taken the battery out and mains charged it but it loses charge so within a week the thing is only just firing up.

I know people have fitted two batterys to theirs but thats to run things when the engine is not running, i was wondering what people have done to improve the starting performance of their batteries?

Yup it does sound like your battery is goosed...fit a heavy duty battery suitable for the size of engine and you will be sorted...you cant really do anything to improve the starting performance of a battery...if healthy it will kick out the amperage its rated at.

cheers boys got myself a new

cheers boys got myself a new heavy duty battery this aft and she's never been happier!

Thanks for your help

Battery number 644 works well

This is a standard light truck battery of about 100 Ah and 600A cranking current.

Two dimensions are identical, except that it is about 2" shorter. A couple of pieces of wood either end of the battery tray sort this out.

me too

the battery was quite old anyway so no harm done really. do you know how i would go about testing the alternator?

testing the alternator?

You can do this if you have suitable voltmeter - a multi-meter set to the correct DC range will do. Connect the meter across the battery terminals while the engine is running at tickover. You should get a reading of about 12 to 13 volts. Then increase engine speed to about 4000 rpm (about the same engine speed as 40mph in top gear) and the voltage should be about the same, but not rise above 14 volts. Then put a load on the alternator by switching on the headlights. The voltage should not drop noticeably. If the alternator is duff, suspect the brushes first, but I don't know where you could get replacements; they only cost pence but most places would rather sell you an exchange alternator for ££'s. Note that this advice is NOT based on experience of Fourtraks - it's just general for most 12v vehicles.

There is an easier way. You say the old battery would go flat in a week. So wait a week - if it still goes flat it was an alternator fault - if it doesn't, it was the battery! Good luck.

Martin I would hope a 2.8 TD

I would hope a 2.8 TD Daihatsu isnt doing 4000RPM @ 40 MPH in top gear. Mine does about 3100RPM @ 110KPH/65 MPH in top gear.
