Fourtrak: Coil or Independant?

Forum:

I'm trying to buy an old Fourtrak for IRO £1K to £1500. I don't expect to be doing long journeys in it - mainly using it off road and for short towing.

Is there much advantage in getting an Independent - or are the coil spring ones OK??

Are there any disadvantages to the Independents??

Is there anything in particular, apart from rust, that I need to ask about or check??

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Fourtrack

Look out for service history, which needs to be completed every 6000 miles, particularly the oil and filters. Cam belts need to be changed to service schedules or sooner - definately no later - 60,000 or 5 years I think. The exhausts tend to go about 3 years. also check the oil seals on the diffs. Properly serviced the engines should last a long time, but it is usually the bodywork that people often find most difficult to repair themselves, and it can be pricy putting in into a bodyshop. Most mechanical bits and bolt on panels can be changed at reasonable cost.

The indipendent is a coil sprung beam axle on the back, and indipedently torchen sprung on the front. The older type 4traks are leaf sprung beams all round.
