Warning Light on a Sportrak 1993

Forum:

Hello

I have a red warning light which has just come on this morning. It has an (!) in the middle of it and stays on. Is this the brakes?

I've turned the house upside down trying to find the manual but I can't find it!

Any help will be greatly recieved.

Thanks

Dan

Brkae warning lamp

Hi Dan,

The (!) light illuminates when your hand brake is on or your brake fluid is low. Either your hand brake lever isn't returning properly ( due to seized cables holding it on) or you have a faulty hand brake switch or your brake fluid is low (either because the brake pads are worn or you have a fluid leak somewhere).

Hope this helps,

Darren

Thanks

Hi Darren

The handbrake warning light is the (P) in the red light is it not??. I'll check the fluid levels and pads. Just letting it settle on a flat surface as its notmally parked on a hill.

Thanks for your reply

Dan

Strange

Well I've checked the brake fluid level and its ok. Went to check the light was still on but it wasn't! I wonder if parking it on the hill would make a difference. I will check the pads next and probably replace anyhow as I'm sure they need doing.

Thanks

Dan

The low brake fluid warning l

The low brake fluid warning light can be a bit of a fun thing to find. It can happen with normal usage, and brake wear, and can still be there after brake refurbishment. Why? Because it relies on a ring float in the brake fluid reserviour. The float is a white ring, with a magnet on the bottom. It obviously drops if the level is low. When the level is nearly out, the magnet will stick to the contacts, completing the warning light circuit. If you fill the reserviour, but fail to release the float from its magnetic grip, then you still have the warning light, even though all is correct. This one had me stuffed for quite a few weeks.

Brake Light

David

This makes so much sense as the light is no longer on. I have had the car parked on a slope for the past week so maybe the float has gone backwards and stuck to the magnet. I parked the car on a level and opened the cap to see the levels. The float was on the top as described above. Checked the light after an is wasn't lit.

I think the brake pads will require changing so may do that anyway.

Many thanks for your time.
