Sterring Column lateral play

Forum:

Just fixed my main beam problem on the Fourtrak, had to take off the steering wheel to get at the switch. To get the wheel off I loosened the nut and then gave the shaft a tap with a copper mallet while pulling up on the wheel with my knees. It came of quite easilly and all seemed well on reassembly apart from there now being about 8mm of lateral play on the steering shaft. If I push down on the wheel it comes to a stop but when I pull up on it it will slide up on the shaft about 8mm. The nut is tight and there is no movement on the other end of the shaft where it goes through the bulkhead.

Is it possible that I've damaged the "collapsible" centre section of the steering shaft Unknw Anyone else come across this Unknw How is it fixed Unknw

Mine has the adjustable tilting steering column.

There is a bearing 'collar" at the bottom of the steering column. This is made out of plastic, and deteriorates over time. I found out about it when I suddenly had heaps of lateral movement in the wheel. Its replaceable by pulling the column out, and removing the large circlip at the bottom, and pulling out the bearing and the plastic collar. I had no problems buying a replacement at a bearing shop here in Oz.

David
