hub play

Forum:

My 1990 fourtrak has recently failled its MOT on a number of little problems, nothing major. However among these was a problem described as excessive play in front offside hub.My own opinion is that the swivel joint bearings need replacing.Do you agree , or am i barking up the wrong tree.Another problem was the exhaust blowing from the joint of the two parts. Are there supposed to be some kind of sealing rings interposed?

If the CV housing is moving up and down when moved by hand, then it is the king pin ( swivel joint) bearings. You can try removing some of the shims that are under the king pin mounting plates. For the exhaust leak, use ordinary silicone type gasket cement. Take the exhaust apart at the join, and smear cement on both parts of the joint, reassemble. Silicon is heatproof, and will fix small leaks.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Thanks for your advice David.I should be getting down to the jobs in hand on Sunday.I'll post a comment to let you know how it goes.
Once the Mot is secured then the trak is up for sale.Any body interested?

Mmm... if he said hub I would have thought he meant hub bearings i.e. wheel bearings but the only way to be sure is to clarify it with the tester. T'would be a shame to spend time cash sorting out the king-pins if those aren't the problem to which the tester was referring.

I have n't had time to have a go at it yet but from what I already know from stipping down the other side I'll have to look at the wheel bearings before I get to the king pins.Since I only live about half an hour from Milners getting parts at short notice is not much of a problem.I should be 100% wiser on sunday when I may get some of the jobs done. Thanks for your help.
