Fourtrak pops out of 2nd ?

Forum:

Any help appreciated....

My Fourtrak will not hold 2nd gear when on tickover whilst slowly letting off the clutch Unknw It only started this today....

It seems to be ok if driven in 2nd first, but pops out when shifted to 2nd at low revs / speed.....

Could something be amiss selector-wise Unknw does it sound sinister ??

I have a service manual CD and tools, but some previous working knowledge would help me lots as im not sure what to do first.....

Cheers... Rob

Update.... Been to the gar

Update....

Been to the garage today with it, still no better....

spoken to a Daihatsu service mechanic about the problem, he seems to dismiss the loose nut problem as the vehicle is 1997 and aparrently the nut was updated to prevent this happening.... He also says that if it was this nut then the first thing i would notice is not being able to get it into 2nd... Not the problem i have of 2nd disengaging....

Although shifting in to second feels less positive now as if it takes a longer stroke of the gearstick to select, also the gearstick moves forward upon release and wont sit fully home.....

The mechanic, who is very experienced on these from a service shop point of view, says that the box will have to be removed as the selector may well need replacing plus other things will need the once over.....

Has ANYBODY else had this particular experience with this gearbox, i would really appreciate your comments before it goes in for an expensive strip down....

Thanks..... Rob.

G'box Popping Out of 2nd

Hiya mate! Unfortunately, this does sound like the box will have to come off the vehicle! It sounds like your selector does need attention. If I remember rightly, the selector has a ball bearing and spring which, when moved from neutral to the relevant gear is compressed during the moving stage and then when it's in position, the spring pushes the ball bearing firmly into a recess which is what holds the gear in position. Sound like either the spring is worn and not strong enough to keep the ball in the recess or the ball is worn and is too small to stay in the recess.
Hope it's nothing too serious buddy!
Regards,
Pete.

Thank you for your suggestion

Thank you for your suggestion....

It went into the garage last week and has been stripped, there are two selector parts that require replacement so not the end of the world.... The main problem i faced personally was that i couldnt get the thing up in the air to do the job, so it had to go in really... I am very glad that i didnt try and split the transfer/gearbox to try the nut....

Just waiting for the rebuild hopefully within the next couple of days, and am safe in the knowledge it has had the 'once over' from a daihatsu mechanic...

Selector Trouble!

Hi Rob! Glad you are finally getting sorted with your g'box problem. It would be interesting to know exactly what the problem was and which parts had to be replaced. If you have time please let us know...just curious, that's all mate. Hope you are back on the road soon,

regards,

Pete.

Got it back now, good as new.

Got it back now, good as new.....

Two selector forks were basically 50% worn on the ends.... And the clutch has been replaced too whilst it was apart, the springs are rattling around in the plate and the lining was on its last..... So saved another strip down in a few months.....

Just got to keep my eye on the cable slack for a few weeks and adjust as neccessary.....

Cheers... Rob
