Sportrak modifying

Forum:

Hello there,
I have recently purchased a Sportrak which I fully intend to use to it's full capabilities. It is my first 4x4 and I would like to find out if there are any decent mods out there for suspension upgrades, winch fitting and if anyone knows of any cheap bull bars, roof bars or other usable accessories. I intend to go greenlaning as a budget package to see what can be achieved for a modest outlay. I am a mechanic serving in Iraq at the moment and so I will understand any technical help that is offered gratefully. I return to the U.K in early november when I would like to start on this project. Many thanks for any help and drive safe...Gary.

Dead easy to lift a Sportrack

Dead easy to lift a Sportrack. Cut the spring shackels in half on the back, and weld in a couple of extra inches of steel. The front is independent. As it's torsion bar suspention all you need to do is, jack the front off the ground and wind the addjustment bolts in untill you get the desired hight. Don't go more than about an inch or two lift though, unless you want to start modifying shock absorber mounts and the such. If you want more space in the wheel arches lift the body over the chassy, this will also keep you center of gravity lower than lifting the whole car on it's suspention. As for bull bars and such, if your actually going to use your jeep, make your own. Standard manufactured ones are only really ment to look good, and as mounting points for spotlights and such. If you actually want to put more than a lunch box in the back, throw away the back seat. If you need three seats, put a single front seat of some kind in the back on the drivers side, allowing the other side to hold highlift jack, chainsaw and the like.

Mods

There are all the mods that Nev says. Plus if you look on the Sportrak section of "the vehicles" it will give you some more ideas. The changing the airbox to a K&N filter is a very good one to do though which everyone who has done it has agreed was well worth while.

I am trying to think of more mods to my Sportrak at the moment but I don't want to raise or lower the height of it because lowered it would look silly and raised i think would be a bit unstable as I take corners at a reasonable speed!!!

Hi Lurch, One of the ways to

Hi Lurch, One of the ways to make it more stable once lifted is to fit wheel spacers. These take only a few minutes to fit and cost about £100. Not cheap but then not much to do with 4x4's ever is. I have searched through various offroad mags sent out to me in Iraq and there are a number of companies that supply them. I will be able to do more research when I get back to the U.K as it is difficult and expensive phoning from here. I have checked out the mod's section and a K&N is top of my list as I have one already fitted to my motorbike and know the advantages of one being fitted (as long as the fuelling can be adjusted). Many thanks for your reply....Gary.

To safely raise a sporti by m

To safely raise a sporti by more than a minimul amount, I think a body lift would be prefurible. Also this leaves your centre of gravity lower than a suspention lift, for those fast corners. However, if your thinking really silly:
6 inch body lift.
Throw away rear axle.
Throw away independent gubins.
Attatch F75 axles.
Lift rear suspention by 2 inches.
Make up front spring hangers to mathch rear hight.
Then top off with 33-12.50/15's on wid rimms.
Don't forget some sort of spats.
