She Keeps Dying on me

Forum:

Hello all,

Could do with a bit of specialist help on this one.

My K plate Fourtrak non turbo has recently developed a bit of a fault which I cant seem to shake. About 6 weeks ago i was driving along as normal and the engine lost all power, and stalled. While it was cutting out it was belching out smoke. I managed to get it going again by starting and giving it loads of revs, got it home and changed the fuel filter. This made a difference but it keeps happening every so often, loosing power and cutting out at junctions if you dont do riverdance with the pedals to keep pushing down on the accelerator while its ideling on the clutch but is usually cured by taking off the fuel filter, emptying completely and re-starting.

Ive also noticed that if you drive at about 70-75 it gets there and then looses power till you get to about 60, then comes back on again.

Ive changed all of the service bits (oil, filters and glow plugs) and its gone ok for a bit, then the problem comes back. Any ideas? Also, to add to this it gets very hot if you cruise at 70 on the dual carridgeway (heaters on relieves this, but is a bit of a slut in the summer sun) and, completely unrelated, when in 4wd doing tight turns the driveshafts start knocking. When i describe at her like this she sounds like a dog but the motor has only done 42000 miles (would long periods of inactivity cause this possibly?) and I love her and dont want her to die before her time. Any imput would be gratefully recieved!!

Thats fuel starvation my frie

Thats fuel starvation my friend. If you have changed fuel filters, or cleaning it out gets it going again, then check your fuel tank pick up. I had a similar problem when running cooking oil. Contaminates were blocking the filters.

Look under the rear, you have

Look under the rear, you have to drop the fuel tank out to get to it.
Undo the pipes going to the tank, this is supply, return, breathers and filler pipes. Mark them so you get them right again. Then undo the 5 bolts that hold the tank up. Its a good idea to drain the tank first, cause they are heavy. This may also show up some fuel contaminatioon. As the tank drops, make sure you dont rip the wires off. Once you have the tank off, mark the position of the sender unit on both the unit, and the tank. Then undo the 5 phillips head screws and remove the sender unit. Check inside the tank for contaminates, and check the pickiup for blockages. Blow backwards through the pipes with compressed air.
Take the opportunity to clean all the mud and crap from the front and rear of the tank, where it accumulates between the tank and cross members. Check for pinholes in the tank where it may have rusted through. Treat the tank with a rust inhibitor.
The alternative to all this is one of the tank breathers may be blocked, creating a vacumn. Especially check the hose with the white plastic connection that clips into the hole in the side of the chassis.
Hopefully this cures your problems.
