2005 Sirion knocking in the steering column

Forum:

Hello
I have a knocking in the sterering column sounds like metal against metal and hear over bumps and at high speed when moving in straignt line/gentle curve. Disappears in sharper bends. At high speeds sounds constantly like dagadagadagadagadagadagadagadaga......
I had suspension and steering checked and the only thing they found was warn stabilizer bushes which is not the problem. I can reproduce the noise when shaking the steeering wheel vigorously. But there seems to be nothing loose around that area... Any ideas?

Have you checked the power

Have you checked the power steering fluid?

It is electric - no fluid

It is electric - no fluid AFAIK. maybe there is some in the rack anyway but the manual does not say there is... There is definitely some knoking along the steering rod - either the U-jount or the rack I think.... Neither is cheap Sad

Just read in a Passo/Boom/Sirion forum that rattling steering rack is a very common fault and they fail from 10K miles. Has anyone had this experience?

sirion steering rattle /knocking/ play

Hi I have a similiar problem with a 2006 sirion sx with 38000 miles on the clock. When the car had the mot done in December I asked the garage to give the steering an extra thorough check as the steering has quite a rattle. On inspection they found nothing to be wrong. Having driven the car since the mot I think the rattle is a little worse, also when the engine is turned off there is slight play in the steering wheel. Can anyone help as this doesn't sound too healthy to me. I have read in the handbook that an allowance of up to 10mm of play is allowed in the steering wheel. Could this be the problem? My partner has a 1998 cuore with 40000 miles on the clock and there is no play in it's steering whatsoever or rattles or knocking.
I would appreciate any input from anyone that might help this mystery.
