back door hinges Fourtrak

Forum:

Hi I've got a problem with my back door hinges on a 1991 2.8 TDX-SE. I think this might be a common problem and was wondering what fixes there are. The door hinges are badly worn (despite being oiled!) and now there is a lot of up-and-down play in the door. You can see the pins and hinges are no longer alinged properly and its starting to get hard to shut the door!

Can you get oversize pins or is it a case of welding on some new hinges?

Thanks for any advice! Gavin.

The biggest problem has alway

The biggest problem has always been the spare wheel hanging of the rear door. The extra weight stresses everything. The hinges wear, this allows the door lock to wear, as well as the striker plate. The V shaped plate that is supposed to take a lot of the weight and bounce, runs out of adjustment, and the pivot within the door lock mechanism flogs out from all the movement. All this adds up to a poor rear door. I partially solved the problem by replacing the rear steps and towbar tongue with a piece of channel iron, with towbar fitted. Onto this is mounted a swing away spare wheel carrier. This takes all the weight, and at least partially alleviates the rear door problems. Growing old is compulsary, growing up isnt, and

David,
Have you got any details and photos of your mod? I have been seriously considering this for my fourtrak but can't think of an off the shelf swing out hinge that I could adapt.

Most aftermarket swingaway spare carriers over here use a trailer stub axle as the pivot. Then a piece of steel is turned to accept a set of wheel bearings. The axle is vertical, obviously, and then the turned steel is fitted with bearings, and pivots over the axle end. The carrier is built off this. You could fabricate a bracket that would either be welded or bolted along the chassis, if you wanted to retain the original rear bumper/step and plastic bumperettes. Otherwise, you can do what I did, which is replacement of entire rear bumper, giving a strong platform to build it off. The only pic I have at the moment that shows it is this one, unfortunately, its from a distance.

I will have to get my finger out and get my camera working again, and take some proper pics.
I have seen a carrier done, using a piece of about 1 inch diametre steel as a long hinge. Two pieces of tube that just slip over the top of this were used to build the carrier off. But, again, the biggest problem on Rockys is how to mount them to the chassis.
On an entirely different track, you could put a false floor in the rear, from mudguard to mudguard, and lay the spare down in there. When I bought my Rocky, the previous owner had done this for a second spare for when he travelled. You lose a bit of cargo space, but you save your hinges.

Mike, Yes, I'd say I know my Rocky fairly well. Last week, it had a gearbox/transfer case replaced, rear axle replaced, which included reinstallation of the Detriot Locker, both tail shafts replaced, and power steering fitted. This was all done using basic hand tools, an engine crane, with the only reference to the manual for lube capacities. I did all this work myself. My Rocky recieved a complete, back to bare shell rebuild at the beginning of last year. This included paint, and change over of dashboard from petrol to diesel configuration.

hmmm good idea for stopping t

hmmm good idea for stopping the wear. I agree the rear hinges aren't really up to the job with all the weight of the spare wheel.

I guess it would help if I did something like you suggest, but given my hinges are already pretty shafted, is there anything I can do to sort them out?
