Dipped headlights F80

Forum:

The dipped headlights on my 1986 F80 sometimes operate OK. Other times I can't get them to come on at all. The main beam (with blue light) and the spots are working fine. Can anyone please email me a circuit diagram for the lighting system. I know there are various relays and a resistor but without a schematic it's literally like working in the dark. As well as a diagram any experience of a similar probelm would be very good to hear about.
Thanks
JOHN

John, First things first, get

John, First things first, get some electrical spray lube, like CRC or WD40, take your steering wheel or the steering column covers off, and give the electrics around the dipper switch a good spray. It could be a build up of crud, dust, ect around the terminal.

Thanks for coming back to my question. I'll give that a try but I would still like to get hold of a circuit diagram so I can see what's connected to what and why! Can anyone help please....

Hi JC Yup I can let you have

Hi JC
Yup I can let you have the circuit diagram..but I need an email addy to send it to m8

S'funny but I have the opposte problem..my main beams packed up...

Anyone know why that could happen..will it be the relay..it failed over a period of time..dipped beam is ok..blue main indicator comes on just no main beam Sad

Dipped headlights fixed

Hi Bundyrumandcoke – I did as you said and fixed the fault. For the benefit of others, I removed the column covers and exposed the switch. There is a clear plastic cover over the copper contacts. This is held in place with plastic clips and comes off easily with the gentle use of a small screwdriver. Once the contacts were exposed I switched to dipped headlights and gently touched the two or three possible ones. I quickly found the one that was not making proper contact, cleaned it with 600 grade emery and sprayed all the contacts with electrical contact cleaner. The switch is now working perfectly.

Now Mike ..... Thanks for the offer of a diagram. Once I've got it I'll see if I can suggest a possible solution for your main beam problem.
