Failed MOT today, rear drum brakes not gripping as it should. Tends to be more servere on left drum. Took drums apart and after brushing off dust a brand new look inside, shoes like new (proof not working propely). On rear axil there is a small mechanisum containing a spring, could this pressure dividing device be failing. Any help on problem greatly appreciated.

Hi-jet brake fail

The rear weight/brake compensator mechanism rots easily and quite common to fail.
Had mine replaced during warranty i think?? so they dont last long.
Alot of hi-jets never get to carry much weight, the compensator never moves up and down and soon seizes.
You have to keep it very clean and greased well to prevent water and salt errosion.
Try cleaning it up and lubricating it, not too sure about dismantling it though.
Also put a bit of weight in the back for the re-test and see if this improves the strength.
Hope this helps,
Dave.

Hijet rear brake problem

Dave, thks for reply,
I have today managed to disconnect this unit off,(I was asked for £110 for new unit) and dismantled the units piston (after removing the rubber dust cover, and extracting two securing circlips). Was moving well in its housing, and piston seals looked ok, but decided to shop around inorder to replace them, but apparently these type of seals are simply not manufactured as spare replacements, so its buy a complete new unit or experiment by placing a small solid bit on housings base in order to maintain the piston on a fixed open position, would you recon this could do the job? (similar as removing a thermosat on cooling system problems)

Hi jet brakes.

Sorry for the late reply.
I would not recomend tampering with the unit.
It does sound like yours was ok, although it could have been stuck until you moved it.
Carrying weight presses the valve allowing stronger brakes.
Keeping it in the open position would cause weaker brakes, i think???
Was the weakness on pedal brake and hand brake??
Have you tried to bleed them??
Regards,
Dave.

Hijet Brakes

Hi Dave,
At the end I did not fix the valve open. I adjusted the handbrake cable (it really needed it), and bled the system, also placed a small spacer on the spring shaft unit (visible from under) to trick the unit that the van is carring some weight. Not huge difference, handrake still dont block rear tyres when pulled firmly (under way), but I will bleed the system further more as I have a small doubt.... Anyways, today I went for the mot retest, it passed!
