Daihatsu Fourtrak 1989 2.5 diesel engine and gearbox interchangeable with a 1982 F50?

Forum:

The diesel from the 1989 fourtrak is a 2.5 non turbo and I think that both this and the gearbox are essentially the same as those fitted to the much earlier Daihatsu F50.

Can anyone confirm this for me please?

Cheers Dave

Are you sure about the motor

Are you sure about the motor in the Fourtrak?? I have a 1985, and its the 2.8 DL. Check the side of the engine block, behind the fuel pump, IIRC, the DL's have it cast into the block.

Well he seems to think it is a 2.5l diesel without a turbo

Hi and thanks for getting back to me.

The engine and gearbox is for sale on ebay. I definately do not want a 2.8 diesel without turbo but the guy told me it was a 2.5L diesel off a 1989 fourtrak................

Hard for me to check because the guy is in Bognor Regis. I thought they may have sold 2.5l diesels in the uk until 1989 but maybe that is incorrect.............

Cheers Dave

Yep, Fair enough, the imports

Yep, Fair enough, the imports into the UK may well have been different to Oz. Looking at the pics off the ebay ad, it looks like a 2.8, but I dont know for certain of the differences between the 2.5 and the 2.8. Sorry I cant be of more help.

Heard to see from those pic's

Heard to see from those pic's but I think it's a 2.8. All the age evidence points to it. The 2.5 was only fited in the F50. The early F70 series were 2.8 non terbo. As you say to be avoided.
The picture looking down onto the engine is not conclusive, but it looks like the injecter pipes leed of to where the rear of the fuel pump would be. This is consistent with it being a 2.8, which has a rotary (Boch type) pump with the injection lines comming out of the back in a circle. The 2.5 however has an in line pump. The injecter pipes come out of the top of the pump, one behind the next.
Could be worth asking the guy to describe the pump to you, or send you a pic?

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

F50 - 2.5 diesel or not this is the question

Nev/David,

Many thanks for your thoughts observations and comments. I did ask the ebayer and he has responded 100% positive that the motor is a 2.5 diesel. He has put this in big red letter on his ad now. He didn't send a photo of the pump but said it looked rotary.

I am sure he is convinced it is a 2.5 but I am worried that there might be a mistake. And Bognor Regis is a hell of long drive for me to find a 2.8 waiting for me by mistake.

Anyway thanks for your help guys.

Cheers Dave

2.5 or 2.8

Could be a 2.5 DG rebuilt to 2.8 DL specs. I blew a DL many years ago and could not source a DL block. We sourced a DG block and bored it to 2.8 specs, new 2.8ltr sleeve kit and used most DL parts and DL head. The only DG bits were the cam and I think the oil pump. Retired this engine last year after 300,000 kms. The only way to tell is DG or DL on the side of the block.
