Rust

Forum:

I have a 1994 Fourtrak that I have owned since 1997 when it was just under three years old & it has always been maintained by a main dealer. Much to my surprise when it went for MOT about 2 months ago it had to have new sills, it was sugested waxoyle would hold rust back, so had it fully rust treeted at a cost of £500,big mistake, as I then desided to remove carpets & seats to touch up any paint inside that needed doing. another bad move as on scraping some rust made a hole in drivers footwell. I also made another 3 small holes in other parts of the floor, that cost another £350 to have repaired. I was told it didn't mater what I did I would not be able to stop the rot & best to get rid within 18 months. For a vehicle that is suposed to be an off roader & has only very seldom gone off road I find the amount of rust that has sudenly come though suprising, but am told this is normal. As it seems body parts such as floorpans are not available it seems my fourtrak will soon have to go. Has any one got any answer to the rust problem

rust problems

I own a 94 sportrak and mine has NO rust and mine spends 30% of its life splashing in mud .I know that a lot of 4x4s get used to launch boats etc which can make them rust badly so is it possible that previous owners have used yours for this purpose? if so I would get rid and buy another one with no rust and have it cleaned and waxoyled before you use it. But once a car needs welding for MOT it will probably always need welding cos you cant stop rot. That said my Ex-boss used to spray old engine oil under the floor on his vans to slow down the rotting process , it did slow it down but you cant stop it altogether.

If in doubt give it a CLOUT!!
If it won't fit you are not hitting it hard enough!!
Hit it harder than you thought you needed to!!

Waxoil .. excellent stuff.

Waxoil [Halfords £20 gallon ... mix with white spirit]... I spray each of my cars every year.
Wonderful example ... Sporty is 15years old and no sign of rust.

reply to comments on my rust problem on

Thanks to all comments on my rust problem. I have always waxoyled my vehicles myself but it dosn't seem to stop a lot of rust if there is a double skin. Have even had waxoyl done by a garage a couple of times thinking they would do a beter job than me it was not done as well as I did it myself. I even had the fourtrak done some time ago but found out at MOT this time they only spray underneeth & not in the sills, I did have it done properly after this MOT but it seems to late to do much good. I will just have to see if it is worth trying to keep it going, and would wellcome any more comments & how to stop rust getting under the sound deadening plastic on the floor,as it is stuck so well it wont come off but I am sure it is rusting underneath. Thanks again

rust

as a mechanic working with old landies etc. we needle scale the whole chassis really well and if findin any bits needin patched we weld on plates then we underseal using an underseal with add`d waxoyl. very few need futher weldin for the next m.o.t.

just keep up with the underseal each year. this will help cut down the rustin.
