Independent Gearbox changable with pre-independent?

Forum:

Can anyone answer this question for me?
I have a 96 TDX Fourtrak with a shot gearbox..(horrible noises from it driving or sitting with engine ticking over..Can select all gears with clutch pressed but once clutch out jumps out of 3rd & 4th)
Anyway been quoted £250 plus vat for 68k mile box...just wondered if the old leaf sprung fourtraks have the same box? Mine has 2H & 4L on selector stick with electric 4H and I know some of the older fourtraks had the same...are the gearboxes the same or did they change them with the facelift model? Could I fit the standard box with 2H,4H & 4L all on the selector stick if I needed too.

Thanks for reading and any help would be appreciated!!!
Cheers
Iain

AFAIK, they are interchangabl

AFAIK, they are interchangable. Remember you are talking seperable beasts here. The gearbox is in actual fact seperate to the transfer case. You could bolt your transfer case to the replacement gearbox, then bolt this all to your motor. That will retain your existing push button 4H. Alternatively, you could bolt in the replacement gearbox/transfer case combo as a unit, and do away with the push button. You MAY have to change an output yoke, as I have found different yokes on different transfer cases.

Fourtrak Gearbox

Hi David,
Thanks for reply. Is it the same box in the later ones? i.e. would a later box than my existing on the independent bolt straight onto the engine (bell housings the same)
Cheers

AFAIK, all mounts, bellhousin

AFAIK, all mounts, bellhousing, crossmembers are the same, so it should bolt straight in. I have chopped and changed motors, gearboxes, and transfer cases on a few vehicles. Mind you, they were all pre independent, except for maybe the DL62 engine I now run in my 85 F75.
Cheers

Gearbox problems

Hi, I've bought a E Reg Fourtrak and it has the 4H on the button and 2H and 4L on the stick. I personally wouldn't know if the gearbox would fit but if you were interested in it a deal could be stuck?

I'm afraid you'd probably have to buy whats left of the old girl as i wouldn't have a clue how to get it out!

Hope I may have been of some help
