Rear Lights Gone Help.

Forum:

Hi all, I have just bought a 94 fourtrak TDX and its a beauty. Everything is working great except for the back lights. I have checked the bulbs and fuses and they seem ok. Thankfully all the lights on the back bumper work fine its just the ones either side of the rear door. Can any body help.....PLEASE.

Do they have smoked glass?

Do they have smoked glass? They may be dumby lights, just there to fill the hole were the lights used to be in the old body style. These can be replaced with working lights.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Smoked Glass

Hi, Thanks for the advice but they are not smoked glass dummy's, I unscrewed them to check the bulbs which are all ok. There is cables attached to both, but on passenger side they ran into what I think is a relay of some sort. It would be nice to get them working again. Also it is legal to just have the bumper lights without the top one working.

The relay thing will

The relay thing will probably be the buzzer that sounds when you have an extra set of indicaters in the circuit, like plugging in a trailer. As for legality, it is OK as it is. If one side worked but the other didn't, that would be a difrent story. You need indicators, stop lights and tail lights, and they must be simetrical on the vertical line of simitary (plus a fog light on the right of course).
I think you would be best to re-wire the lot yourself from the bumper lights.

You might find extra fuses under the bonnet. I have had my 94 fourtrack nine years. When I got it I had the extra lights fitted both sides of the door these were options if you wanted them. blanking plates were fitted as standard. The garage allso put a new loom for caravan wireing. On my first trip towing I had trouble with the extra lights going out & found the new loom was shorting. It seems the extra lights came from the same fuse. mine was at the time on the N/S inner front wing. The fuse was in a relay, you might find there is a clip on the relay you have to take off first, the relay on your vehicle might be in a diferent place.

Rear Light

These are normally dummies but are often connected up or added as an extra. They are not necessay as long as all the bumper lights work but like me I would have to find why. Check the presnce of live at each socket with a testing light, if all are ok then check the earth for corrosion or broken connection. I'm afraid it may be a process off running back to where these join into the loom for the bumer lights to find the power loss. If fitted by Daihatsu then it should be a block connector, on the other hand if fitted by a DIY person some use those SCOTCH clips or the old fasion bullet connectors which either work but for a short time or don't work at all. They both fail from corrosion in time. Check these for live in and out Replace these or any that fail the test and you should solve the problem. These SCOTCH clips need to be taken off the market as they are rubbish and eventually will let you down. The bullet connectors are very often the problems with old MG's and such as theycorrode internally. Sounds like a bit of a task but once resolved, and it will be simple, will be very worth while.

Good luck
