Forum:
Hi All,
I've just bought a Sirion Rally 2 a couple of months ago, I'm very pleased with it especially as it's quite nippy & economical.
The car is low milage with a full service history & seems genually looked after, however I've noticed that it seems to be 'Pinking' when hot or cold & the tappits sound noisy.
I've tried super unleaded a couple of times which has made little diffrence & took it to the Diahatsui garage where I bought the car, which informed me that there's nothing wrong with it.
I don't know if these 'pinking' & tappit noises are a charicteristic of this car (VVT Engine?) as I know very little about the Sirion & can get very little info about the car.
Can anyone help?

Thanks for the reply,
I think I'm going to have the same problem with dealers as your friend
I've done a little digging on the net & found that the car is modified by 'AMD Motorsport' for Daihatsu (remapped ECU etc), thus I think the dealers might be out of there depth?
My Rally 2 is Green, I'm still quite pleased with it.
Silly question but are there any Sirion Rally 2's in the Daihatsu Charade GTti Owners Club?
Cheers

Your not alone! I have a YRV
Your not alone!
I have a YRV 130 Turbo and the wife has a YRV F - Speed, both of which have the same engine as your Sirion.
I was concerned abount the pinking noise as well which appears on both of our cars which have been dealer serviced.
My dealer has told me it is a characteristic of Variable Valve Timing engines and only occurs below 2000 rpm.
I've tried using super unleaded, but it makes no difference!
I have considered filling the car with super unleaded and then disconnecting the battery for 5 mins to 'clear' the ECU and letting it 'relearn' the new parameters with a higher octane fuel. If you do so before me, post up the results!
Meantime, you'll probably find that the 'pinking' goes away when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

Thanks for the info.
I think the common trend with these post is that Daihatsu dealers are not very good? Which is strange because according to some survays of car manufactures/models, Daihatsu has a very good record & reputation?
Your right, Super Unleaded made little diffrence (to the pinking problem & performance!)When I get time I may try your idea of resetting the ECU.
Do your YRV's have a 'tappit' noise from the engine below 4K?
pinking
The sirion engine has a cam chain which could be rattling on worn guides.Mine is the same but goes after 4,000rpm.It doesnt affect the performance.I would check the valve clearences as well.
Mine pinks from time to
Mine pinks from time to time, especially when cold. To be honest I've never thought it a problem. I have had my Rally2 for 3 years now and have asked my local dealer (Angmerine) about various engine noises etc but they aren't much help. Not really interested I guess. Funny enough, I always seem to think that mine performs that little bit better in the colder months.

The pinking on mine goes away when warm or above 2k.
How reliable has your Rally 2 been?
Dose your engine have what I would describe as a 'Tappit' sound untill you go above 4k?
Took mine to the dealer about this, they told me it was just the injectors? (what rubbish!)
