Forum:
I was checking my 1988 4trak for the forthcomming MOT and noticed excesive play on the front wheel comming from the kingpin area. I believe that there are 2 tapered bearings that may need replacing but has anyone done this repair work? Does the whole hub assembly have to come off or can i simply unbolt the 2 plates holding the bearings in place? Your advice will be appreciated.
Swivel play
If you undo the 4 bolts holding the bearings you'll be able to remove the centre part of the bearing but not the outer race which is pressed into the swivel itself. You should find that there is a number of shims of varying thickness under the plate which can removed to reduce the free play in the bearings. Do this to the top and bottom bearings equally to remove excessive play. While you've got the bearing out you can feel the outer race with your finger for wear grooves usually in the straight ahead position. If it is badly grooved then the hub will have to come apart so the bearing races can be knocked out from inside. There has been discussion on this forum and others about replacement bearings not fitting correctly due to different tapers being used. Have a look at this thread: http://www.daihatsu-drivers.co.uk/node/1296 for some extra information.
