Stalling when braking !!

Forum:

Hi All, Have a 96 Sportrak 1.6 petrol, started to stall when braking, think it's the anti stall valve as the revs drop to low. I have recently put new distributor cap, arm, leads, plugs & air filter on her.
Has anybody had this experience with theres or know of any other reason that could be causing it before i pay out more money??????
Would appreciate any ideas.

1. points gap 1mm. 2. spark

1. points gap 1mm.
2. spark plug gap 1mm
3. assume you removed the distributor to get at the points .... at what degree did you set the distributor timing?

points gap

Hi Mace, I didn't reset the points or timing as it was running fine when i replaced the cap & arm, but i will take a look now but wouldn't have thought it should have changed...
I replaced alot of things as it was gutless when it was running cold, it seems to have cured that but has now started stalling.

poor master cylinder

I have not had this problem on mine but had similar problem on a vauxhall astra, and the problem there was due to the faulty master cylinder, the vacuum was leaking, not sure whether this is relevant but you never know.

I would suggest you check

I would suggest you check for any vacuum leaks on the inlet manifold and associated pipework.

My Sierra :-o had a similar problem when the vacuum advance to the dizzy failed.

Also, and this can be expensive, it maybe that brake servo diaphragm is leaking, due to rot, due to brake fluid getting into the servo (typically overflowing when putting new brake pads on).

This is happening to me too - no idea why though

Just wanted you to know that I am having the same trouble. It is always when I have the clutch down or the gears in neutral, so it is very weird. The other dayu it happened as I went around a corner and therefore lost the Power Stearing - I ended up on the otherside of th road, but luckily there was no-one else around.

stalling

I recently had the engine flushed on my Grand Move, the flushing fluid was left in for a week. Since then I have had no stalling problems, I had the same problem as you, when I approched junctions the engine just cut out without warning. but no more, hurrah!

STALLING

I would check the servo link to the inlet manifold for a vacume leak. It could well be a dodgy servo if it is oly occurring when you brake.Does it stall when you dip the clutch and coast? If it does thenit may not be the servo or the link.

Being a 1996 there are no points as its an Electronic Unit so the timing won't have changed by just replacing the parts mentioned. The plug gaps are 1mm but I doubt if they are the problem.

You can check the system for sensor faults by using the explanation and method I posted some time ago on the forum.
