can't stop the engine from rev-ing

Forum:

Hi all,

in addition to my recent clutch issues, I now have another problem:

After driving up a long steep climb on the A38 in Cornwall (Saltash tunnel to the Carkeel round-about) I took my foot off the accelerator and started braking, depressed the clutch, started changing gear - and realised that the car was rev-ing like crazy. The rev counter stayed around the 5000 RPM mark when the engine is not under load.
When under load, it drops, but tries to keep accelerating - except for the steepest of climbs...

I thought that I had stepped on the wrong pedal at first.

After pulling over I found that the accelerator cable did NOT appear to be stuck / burred etc...

Re-starting the engine took it straight back up to high revs, until I brought the clutch up and put it under load.

I eventually found that repeatedly pushing the accelerator all the way and releasing it solved the problem, but that it re-occurred 3 or four times on the way home.

What could the problem be? How should I begin to diagnose it?

Vehicle:

Daihatsu Grand Move+ 1.6L T-reg. Petrol.
Thank you for all and any suggestions.

Can't stop engine from rev-ing

Hi sounds like you're throttle cable is sticking either take of and lubricate or buy new one.

idle speed valve

not sure what the set up is on your daihatsu but my wifes escort did the same and it was the idle speed valve needing cleaned eventually after it happened for a 4th time over 3yrs it did the opposite dropping the revs stopping the enging so had to replace it altogether, not sure if that helps but if u have a iddle speed valve then my bet would be on it.by the way it didnt do it all the time and it was always ok when the auto choke was on when cold and didnt rev up as much as u said only about 1000revs above idle speed. hope u get it sorted bill

Fast revving

Initially it does sound like a problem with the cable.

If the inner cable had not been maintained and rust is visible at either end of the outer cable then a grease may well free it or some 3 in 1 oil may cure it.

What often occurs is a piece of the inner cable breaks and the sharp end snags on the inside of the outer cable preventing it from relasing when the pedal is released. It is not always obvious or visible until removed from the car and the inner cable removed from outer cable. The only remedy is replacement of inner and outer cable together.

If it isn't this then you will probably need the system diagnosed as the ECU may not be responding properly, although I think the symptons do not point in this direction.

cable

Hi,

I did check the cable and it has always been well lubricated.
Plus when I got under the bonnet and moved the rotating lever that it's attached too I saw that it returned to the rest position.

But on starting the car it was still revving - hence I'm not sure that it is the cable. But it's worth retrying.
I'll look at replacement this weekend though, as it presents the least expensive route prior to other checks/relacements.

Is there anywhere that you know of that I could get a diagram / book detailing how the throttle assembly works on that engine?
I have been wondering whether there are any similarity with Charade engines?

Also, do you know whether the standard VAG diagnosis systems are compatible with a Daihatsu Grand Move diagnosis system as I'd like something like that to check for fault codes etc...

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

idle speed

Ok, thanks for that tip, I'll see if I can find out more.
I'm changing the brake fluid and replacing the exhaust pipe this weekend too, so I'll see if I can find an idle speed valve on there.

Thank you for taking the time to post a comment.
