Forum:
I own a F85 2 Litre petrol Fourtrak, but have just aquired a 1988 Sportrak with a duff 1.6cc carb engine.
Sportrak will not be directly in my hands until this weekend, so dont yet know the total extent of engine problem, but told its terminal!.
But I was just wondering??... would the Fourtrak engine fit directly into the Sportrak? are the bellhousing and transmission couplings the same?, also how many of the running components are interchangable between Four and Sport trak?
Any info gratefully received.
Cheers!
Geoff
Don't know about the engine f
Don't know about the engine fitment. But I can tell you that the transmition is quite diffrent between the 4trak & sporti. For instance the sporti has banjo diff's, whilst the 4trak has sensible Sailsbury type afairs. Also obviously the sporti has indipendent suspention on the front. At a guess I'd say the engin will go, as daihatsu are farly sensible at making things universal. Having said that remember that the 3Y engin (2ltr) has a longer primary/inputshaft on the gearbox than all the other 4trak engins. Hope that's of some help?
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
Engine Swap
Hello There,
You should get the complete workshop manual from Luke and you can see all the details. I agree, I think it is posiple.

Per.
Carb
If the sporty engine is totally sh***ed, would you like to donate the carb to a worthy cause? (namely me).;)
Weights
Hello every one. Great site.
Just bought our first 4x4 fourtrack to tow our caravan. It wasnt the power needed but the weight ratio we were looking for. I tow with peugeot 406 at top limit 95%.
Any way i know the foutrack is well up to it but would like to know the GVW / GTW etc etc. Under the bonnet details are a tad sketchy. It doesnt for example show the Kerb weight. Does anyone know the list of legal weights? The other thing I have noticed is the feeling of power sitting up there above the other cars. Is this a normal reaction or do I have to visit the plastic surgeon to remove the smile
Engine swap - update
Thanks to those who replied.
Sportrak engine has two minute cracks in the outer casing metal by cylinder bore number two. Its like three rings of material enclosing or forming the cylinder bore, with the two outer rings cracked. The cracks dont line up, and only seem to be at the very top, nor do they actually go through to the cylinder bore itself - very strange!
Need to consider, if worth taking a chance and re-building as is, or finding secondhand block, been quoted £300 for such, without head - very heavy price - but maybe only alternative, as rest of car really too good to scrap or break.
Sorry Evansthesheep, will need to keep carb for time being - nice try though!!
Decided against the original engine swap idea - no point in making the Fourtrak a non runner as well.
